Although "Curry" has been around in Britain since the days of old, it was for many years just a spicy alternative to bland British fare.

The word "Curry" is used as a generic term for any sauced dish of hot or spiced meats, fish or vegetables, and is generally agreed to be an interpretation of the Tamil word for sauce, "Kari". The almost limitless combinations of spices blended to enhance any main ingredient gave the British an idea they came up with "Currypowder" a reproduction of Indian spicing to take home as their palates had become accustomed to spiced food they would have a reminder of India every time they tried to concoct their version of Curry, "which bore little resemblance to anything produced in India homes".
